November 24, 2024: Hello from the patio of Scott’s Malibu Market. This first of many three-dot columns is being written from the porch of Scott’s Malibu Market…. Right now Scott’s Malibu Market are rocking the 60s with Tell Her No by The Zombies on one of those fresh, post-storm Malibu early winter days, and life is good. But it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas and could be time for some Vince Guaraldi… C Tompkins and J Weinstein from Broad Street Oyster came by with young Walter in the pram. They talked story with Scott about how winter business ebbs and flows in Malibu: “It all depends on the weather,” was the consensus. And to be Johnny Cocrainish: “If it rains, people refrain. If the weather is clear, people come here.”… Right now Malibu is fresh and clear - the remnant of that weird, Cabo Hurricanish storm that brought rain and destruction from British Columbia down to San Francisco - 13 inches of rain in Santa Rosa… Last night at Zinque, while grilling P and L London on what is happening with Surf Canyon and the bad voodoo circling that deal, they mentioned that Surf Canyon will be having a Christmas Fair on December 14. For more information on that, look to … American football/soccer fans who are familiar with women’s soccer will be interested that Olympic Gold medalist Lynn Williams will be getting hitched on the pier to her fella Marley Biyendolo, a 2014-2015 Pepperdine basketball player and winner of Australia’s Big Brother 13….And speaking of fresh, freshly-crowned Malibu City Council member Haylynn Conrad is flying back to New York to hang out with her father David Cohen at his place in Coney Island - an apartment where he has lived his whole life and where a teenaged Haylynn thought she would never leave. What’s the saying? “It’s okay to look back, only to see how far you’ve come.”… Haylynn will be back in time to assume her position on the City Council, and announce her appointees for Planning Commissioner and Arts Commissioner and Ding Repairer, among others…It was a shocking but pleasant surprise to find Jesse Faen sitting in a booth at Zinque with another Australian gentleman. Three months ago, Faen and a friend came THAT close to leaving us after his motorcycle was hit by an elderly man as Faen was returning home from LAX. Faen broke every other bone in his body - his pre-surgery photos looked like a shark attack - but this is the 21st Century and Faen is up and around only three months later: Very glad to be alive.

Myths.. Legends.... Rumors... and Lies. Malibu Gossip, News, Announcements.
Myths, Legends, Rumors and Lies is a regular, ongoing gossip, news, announcements and rumor column in the tradition of Herb Caen, Walter Winchell and Louella Parsons.
Herb Caen (1916 - 1997) was a San Francisco Bay Area institution who wrote an all-popular three-dot gossip, news and rumor column for The San Francisco Bulletin (1938 - 1942) then The Oakland Tribune (1942-1944) and finally The San Francisco Chronicle (1938–1997) The San Francisco Chronicle from 1938 to his death in 1997.
Caen was the witty, all-knowing voice of the San Francisco Bay Area who produced 18,000 columns over his career.
A special Pulitzer Prize awarded in 1996 for his "persistence, charm, popularity, and influence" for his column known for its wit, insider anecdotes, and sharp commentary. The Pulizter committee called him the "voice and conscience" of San Francisco.
Herb Caen was the voice of the Bay Area, Walter Winchell (1897 - 1972) was The Voice of America. He rose to national celebrity in the 1930s with Hearst newspaper chain syndication and a popular radio program. He was known for an innovative style of gossipy staccato news briefs, jokes, and Jazz Age slang. He uncovered both hard news and embarrassing stories about famous people by exploiting his exceptionally wide circle of contacts, first in the entertainment world and the Prohibition era underworld, then in law enforcement and politics. He was known for trading gossip, sometimes in return for his silence. His outspoken style made him both feared and admired.
And where Herb Caen was the voice of the Bay Area and Walter Winchell was the Voice of America, Louella Parsons (1881 - 1972) was the Voice of Hollywood. The shortened Chat GPT version reads: “Louella Parsons was an influential American gossip columnist known for her long career in Hollywood journalism. Parsons worked as a gossip columnist for several prominent newspapers during her career. She worked for The New York Evening Journal but she is most famous for her long tenure with the Los Angeles Times - starting there in 1925 and over four decades, became one of the most powerful and well-known entertainment journalists of her time. Parsons wrote around 30,000 columns, becoming one of the leading voices in celebrity gossip and Hollywood news. She was the first woman to achieve significant prominence in Hollywood reporting and often had exclusive access to stars, making her a powerful figure in the industry.
Parsons was a key figure in shaping public opinion about Hollywood stars, and she was known for her ability to create and destroy careers with the information she shared. She had a reputation for being able to keep secrets, yet she was also known to expose the hidden lives of celebrities in a way that reflected the glamorous yet often scandalous side of the film industry.
Her columns were syndicated, meaning they appeared in many newspapers across the country, and her reach and influence were immense. However, over time, as new, more sensational gossip columnists like Hedda Hopper rose to prominence, Parsons' grip on the industry weakened.
As Herb Caen was the voice of the Bay Area, and Walter Winchell was the Voice of America and Louella Parsons was the Voice of Hollywood, Myths, Legends, Rumors and Lies aspires to be the Voice of the Malibu.
