Thank you to Malibu. 12-10-24. Haylynn’s acceptance speech on a night that will live in inflamey.
On Tuesday, December 12, 2024 - a day that will live in inflamey - Haylynn Conrad was sworn in to Malibu’s 18th City Council.
As the wind began to swirl outside and Malibu was under a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) warning from the National Weather Servide and a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) from SoCal Edison, inside Malibu City Hall Haylynn was sworn in to the 18th Malibu City Council by her daughter Ella and her AYSO teammates.
That all went smooth as butter and then Haylynn made the following acceptance speech:
Good evening everyone, I want to thank you for being here today.
First and foremost, I want to thank my husband and kids, family and my dear friends for their support through this new chapter in my life. I am grateful, your love means the world to me.
And Secondly, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every resident of Malibu who supported me in this election and endeavor. Many of you are new friends and how lucky I consider myself to be to have met all of you through this process. Each of you has shown or taught me something new and wonderful Malibu.
Your trust in me is not something that I take lightly. It is with great honor and humility that I stand before you today ready and excited to serve our beautiful community and make it better for the generations to come.
Malibu is not just a place; it’s a lifestyle, a sanctuary, and a unique part of the world. My commitment to you is to ensure that the essence of malibu is not only preserved, protected but also enhanced.
One of my top priorities is the safety of our community. We’ve seen too many tragedies on PCH, and the threat of wildfires is ever present.
I pledge to work tirelessly to improve safety measures, collaborate with law enforcement, and emergency services to prevent accidents, and to mitigate the risks of fires.
We will explore innovative solutions to make our communities safer and operate more efficiently. All the while keeping in mind a vision for the future, sustainability, and continuing the rural nature of this coastal village.
Malibu's charm lies in its natural beauty and its distinct community spirit. I am dedicated to respecting our Mission and Vision statement, upholding our zoning laws, environmental protections, cultural heritage while always listening to the needs and desires of the residents.
Together we will ensure the continued respect of our land, our ocean, our unique character, always balancing and using common sense to any proposed changes to our small rural town.
Lastly, in these divisive times, I believe it is crucial more than ever to foster an environment of integrity, transparency, decency, and civility in not only our political discourse, but also in our everyday exchanges whether that is in person or online. Our children are watching, let’s make them proud.
My door will always open for dialogue, constructive discourse and for listening. I look forward to working with all of you - my friends, my Neighbors, my fellow Council members, and our city staff to all partner in an even better Malibu.
Again…I am grateful and humbled for this opportunity to serve you. Thank you.
The City Council meeting continued for an hour or so more, and then around 10:30, a brushfire started a few miles up Malibu Canyon.
In less than an hour, Santa Ana winds blowing at 40+ MPH sparked a raging firestorm.
Malibu looked like Dante’s Inferno as the Franklin Fire raged through the night and for the next two days.
Waterfalls of flame and palm trees going up like Roman Candles.
Welcome to the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the Malibu.
